This Rama I-period mosque, the nation’s only brick-and-concrete mosque in traditional Thai style, was built by a Muslim merchant called To YI.
The gables are decked with plaster stucco of tri-ethnic artworks: the intricate traditional motif lining the gable frame, the Western foliage motif on the gable panel, and the flowers in Chinese floral patterns. This motif is applied to all the portal and window decoration in the mosque. The whole building is painted while. The timber parts are painted green. Later, a Chinese Museum called Chaosua Puk added a mimbar (the pulpit) and a mirop (the canopy over the pulpit), all decked with this tri-ethnic motif.
Although traditional Thai in style, the building still carries Islamic symbolic features, for instance, there are 30 pillars, and the prayer’s room has 12 windows and 1 door to denote the number of the 13 prayer regulations.
